This is how I’m hoping to get my young niece motivated to read more —- a The Very Hungry Caterpillar reading chain, which will be put up on her bedroom wall. I designed the head to be similar to Eric Carle’s design. The head and body pieces are made from construction paper and a template (mostly just a picture of the caterpillar).

Every time she finishes a story/book, we will add a body piece (any color since I want to look cool—-I haven’t made those pieces yet). In order to know that she has read the book, we will have her read to us (at her age, she is mostly reading beginner readers which are easy to reread). When she gets to a certain number of body pieces, the caterpillar will “cocoon” and become a butterfly; those will be made at a later date along with the body pieces. This means something special will happen, like maybe a trip to the zoo.
