How To Read a Book

- The first step in reading a book is to acquire one. You can find a book at your local library or a book store. Try and select a book according to your interests, your likes and dislikes, and whatever seems to “grab” you. Most fictional books will have their premise, or plot set-up, described either in the front flap or on the back of the book.

- Once a book is acquired, pick a setting, Usual settings include bedrooms, bathtubs, subways (same apparel not suggested), or classrooms. (Note: be aware of any rules or laws being broken by reading in certain settings. Reading and driving not suggested.)

- When you are comfortably situated with your book in your setting, open your book. Most books in English read from left to right, so make sure your book is opened correctly.

- Read! Take stock of letters becoming words becoming phrases, sentences, paragraphs, chapters. Sudden waves of humor or emotion are common. Side effects of reading include loss of awareness of the real world, time travel, sore eyes or neck, contemplation of life, changes in mood or perspective, gain in vocabulary, and increase in enjoyment of more books.
