My top Book Recommendations for 2013 1. Peter Shaffer’s Equus (a play about a somewhat disturbed boy with an odd affection for horses) 2. Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted (young woman in the 1960s sent to an asylum) 3. Jeffrey Eugenides’ the Virgin Suicides (a dark story of 5 sisters growing up in a 1970s suburb) 4. Ned Vizzini’s It’s Kind of a Funny Story (semi-autobiographical story of a depressed boy who checks himself into a Brooklyn hospital) 5. Alice Sebold’s the Lovely Bones (a harrowing tale told from the perspective of an already deceased 14year old girl who was raped and murdered) 6. Jonathan Lethem’s Motherless Brooklyn (a flawed man with Tourette’s and echolalia working for a small time mobster) 7. Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (a group of men in a mental institution fighting back against the oppressive staff) 8. Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (the ups and downs in the life of an orphan in 19th century Britain)
