On reading and becoming picky…

glitchdoll:

I saw Robot and Frank, and then went to Chapters, where I realized that I don’t read as much as I used to.

This is particularly distressing, considering what field I want to get into.

The problem is that when I was in middle/high school, I wasn’t as picky as I am now. I could go into any random store, pick a random book, read it in a day or two, and if it sucked…well, it sucked. I’d move onto the next book and sell the book to the used book store near my mom’s office or give it away or whatever.

In university, I read what was mostly on the course list, or things related to it. Since I was an English major, it was mostly novels or short stories anyways.

Now…now I can’t just walk into Chapters and pick something at random anymore. I did that once about a year ago and the book was the most dreadful thing I have ever read…and it actuallybotheredme. I actually threw the book across the room because I was so annoyed with how bad it was.

I still read, obviously, but now when I buy books, they’re almost always classics or something by an author I’ve already read. I’ve lost the ability to buy books that are totally new. I look at them of course, but I always sneer at the descriptions, make fun of character names (…though while we’re on the topic, I found three books today with characters named Valentine. That is all I’m going to say on that matter.), and so on.

…so yeah. I don’t read as much as I used to because I talk myself out of books before I can read them. It’s strange.
