Book Virginity
When I was in elementary, I couldn’t give half a shit about reading. For me, the library was a place where people go only when they’re forced to by a teacher as a part of some troublesome requirement.
This particular view, however, changed when I was in the 4th grade. I’ll be honest. I didn’t actually go to the library because I wanted to read. I went there because the girl I liked at the time was a book worm so I’d immediately agree to go with her to the library during recess/after dismissal when she’d ask me to. I’d usually just sit directly in front of the huge air conditioner and take a nap or pick up one of the books I found interesting back then (see: Ripley’s Believe It Or Not).
After another boring day at school, she asked me to go with her again and I agreed ,although bit unwillingly. We sat in front of the air condition and, as she was reading a book with a violently pink cover, I spotted a tall, thick book entitled The Meanwhile Adventures. I picked it up off the shelf and was happy to see that it was printed in huge text, so that means it’s size was merely for show. I sat next to her again and started reading. I was amazed at how it made me laugh. ‘It’s a book” I thought “This is supposed to be boring”.But it wasn’t. I had fun reading the first few chapters so I decided to take it home with me (my friend was actually surprised when I fell in line behind her).
Thus I lost my book virginity.
