Only 3%of books published in the United States have been translated from foreign languages, whereas in Europe the percentage is more like 50%. We need to have literature in translation because we need the widest possible diversity of work for people to fall in love with. My hope for Words Without Borders is that it can be a vanguard in the war against ignorance and enable all of us to connect with worlds that are different from our own.
