sheliesandsayshesinlovewithhim:

My love affair with books began at the tender age of 4. My mum gave me a book ‘Girls Can Be Anything’ and it lit a flame inside of me. Along with the empowerment that I could be whoever I wanted to be, I learned early on that reading would open up my world.

I have read thousands of books. Trashy romance novels, historical fiction, crime novels, medical textbooks, biographies, poetry, classics such as Pride and Prejudice, Gone with the Wind and my all time favourite Heidi. I have cried at the end of books, hated characters with an absolute passion and dreamed of my own Mr Darcy.

I will rescue a book from miserable demise - which means I have boxes of books I will probably never read, yet couldn’t let my friends throw them out in the rubbish. I love going to opshops and buying second hand books.Old books have such mystery and I often wonder who has held the book before me. Did they turn the corners down on the edge or use a bookmark? Did it sit on their bedside table or did they carry it in their bag to read on the bus?

I remember when I was 10 and I did the MS Readathon. In the space of 8 weeks I read 47 books. I raised more money than the entire class combined. My teacher thought I was highly motivated to win the top prize, which was a 14” TV, but I just loved reading. I didn’t stop there. In Year 7 I did my book report on Gone With The Wind. I fell in love with Ashley Hamilton and spoke with such passion that the teacher cried.

When I had my own children, I hoped they would love books as much I did. Turns out they are even more passionate than me. Noah will read anywhere, anytime. Most people want their kids to grow up and make lots of money. I just want my kids to keep reading - success will then surely follow them, because knowledge is the key to endless opportunity….
