The Woman In Black - Susan Hill
This is the first novel I have finished this year, I can’t believe it has taken me until the 21st to finish one! And even then, it’s only a short novel (which still took me 3 evenings to read). My reading habits need to become better, I need to be able to read more pages in an evening without falling to sleep! But never the less, this being my first finished fiction of the year, it was a good start! This book was superb!
I read some reviews on Goodreads once I had finished, and I was shocked by how many people didn’t like it! Ok, it isn’t quite as scary as some people state it to being, but still, the books flow, language, plot, characters and style were beyond my expectations.
What caught me by surprise was the ease of her writing style, it was elaborative yet easy to read. It flowed very gently, never skipped a beat and was beautiful. The plot was eerie, well thought out, although I was a bit disappointed that he didn’t go to the house and discover the truth of the Woman in Black for himself. That would have been more interesting to read.
Although some people said that it was the scariest book they have read, I didn’t find it as scary as I thought. It was however haunting, and I could have killed the woman in the flat above me when she dropped her phone at the worst time! In saying that, I am glad it was terrifying, because if it was I wouldn’t be able to finish it and I would have been disappointed.
So, there are my thoughts on the book, I don’t want to give too much away because I hate reading reviews of books that basically tell me the plot line. If you have read it, tell me what you thought. If you haven’t, then I suggest you do (if you want to).
